Solar PV for my home

Solar PV panels are suitable for both urban and rural locations and are adaptable to almost any building that has sufficient exposure to light. Typically, solar PV panels are mounted on a pitched roof; however they can be mounted on a flat roof or on the ground.

The majority of UK homes are suitable for a Solar PV installation. All you need is an un-shaded roof space that faces within 90 degrees of south.
To check if your home is suitable we initially use Google Earth© and subject to suitability we would offer a site survey.
During the survey we take measurements, check the roof structure and inspect the electrics to ensure everything is suitable for your Solar PV installation.
There are several ways a Solar PV system can be installed on your home. The options available include:

  • On-roof
  • In-Roof
  • Solar tiles
  • Flat-roof mounted
  • Ground mounted

Whilst there are some subtle differences in the installation procedure dependent upon your roof type - see our PV Case Study for examples - only homes with thatched roofs are truly problematic.

Where on my home will the PV panels be installed?
As we are in the Northern Hemisphere, a south facing roof will receive the most sunlight – the perfect home for solar has a roof orientated somewhere between South West and South East, with a 30 degree slope and no shading. For homes that do not have a south facing roof, east-west splits are quite common, and will produce roughly 85% of the energy a south facing roof will. ORBS Energy’s engineers will assess your home, help choose the panels and design a bespoke panel layout, so you can be assured you will use your roof space to its full potential.

Is my home in a suitable location for Solar PV?
Solar PV is appropriate for homes in most urban and rural locations in the UK. The amount of energy received from the sun does vary across the UK – but it not by a large amount. The most important thing to watch out for when considering installing a PV system is shade; beware of any trees, buildings and other obstructions, lying to the South.

What is the angle of your roof?
The pitch or angle of your roof can make a difference to the amount of sunlight it will receive throughout the day and therefore the amount of energy that can be generated. ORBS Energy cater to most roof types and your Solar Consultant can discuss your needs with you in detail.

How shaded is your roof?
Any shading on your roof area from chimneys, trees or surrounding properties will have a negative impact on the amount of energy your roof panels will be able to produce. Our consultants will work with you when planning the installation to avoid shading wherever possible.
